Bonnie Freeman appointed new Indigenous Education Council, Academic Co-chair

As McMaster University navigates its own changes in leadership, the Indigenous Education Council is also welcoming a new Academic Co-chair. On October 15th, 2025 the Indigenous Education Council moved to designate Dr. Bonnie Freeman as Academic Co-chair.
Bonnie is Algonquin and Mohawk from the Six Nations of the Grand River. She is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work and Indigenous Studies at McMaster. Her educational journey and academic accomplishments bring a leadership perspective that is grounded in community and relationship building.
Bonnie completed her Bachelor and Master of Social Work at McMaster, and her Ph.D. in Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University. Her research approach involves Haudenosaunee cultural practices and land-based activities, creating space for life-changing personal, community and relational healing and transformation.
Bonnie’s presence in this role comes at an exciting time as McMaster installs Beverly Jacobs as Indigenous Vice-Provost, a historic first, in the new year. The Indigenous community at McMaster, and indeed the whole university is extremely fortunate to receive the guidance of such exemplary and distinguished leaders.
The IEC is looking forward to collaborating, continuing good work and building the momentum of Indigenous education at McMaster University.
